Guidelines to Authors

Proceedings of the Indian National Science Academy is a fully open-access (available online at http://insaindia.res.in/ and http://insa.nic.in) multi-disciplinary journal that publishes reviews, original research articles, commentaries, opinions, letters to editor, emerging techniques, book reviews, Academy News etc in all areas of sciences and engineering/technology, except generally original research papers in areas of Pure and Applied Mathematics for which the Academy publishes a separate journal, the Indian Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IJPM). However, in areas of Pure and Applied Mathematics, articles of interest to a broad readership, and manuscripts based on INSA award lectures and reviews/surveys contributed by newly elected INSA fellows and YS awardees  will also be considered for publication in the Proceedings of the Indian National Science Academy. 

There are no page, colour or processing charges. All articles published in the Proceedings of the Indian National Science Academy (PINSA) are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. 

Currently, four issues of Proceedings of The Indian National Science Academy are published in March, June, September and December of each year. Special/thematic issues can be published as decided by the Indian National Science Academy.

1.  Manuscript   Preparation

The manuscript should be prepared in single spacing on A4 size paper, using word processing software such as MS Word with Times New Roman 12 size font. The spellings should be according to Oxford Dictionary.

(a)     Main Text: Manuscripts for original research papers should generally be divided into the following sections and arranged in that order: Cover page, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, Conflict of Interest, Author Contributions, Data Availability, Ethical Approval and References. These sections are not numbered but should be marked in bold face fonts.

Notes: i) If a research article has more than one author, contribution by each author must be stated under Author Contributions section.

ii) For those research articles which include data-sets that are required to be deposited at publicly accessible databases, the appropriate reference to the deposited data must be provided under Data Availability section.

iii) Any study that requires ethical clearances, a statement about the due approval of the required committees should be recorded under Ethical Approval section.

Manuscripts for Reviews should include Abstract, Introduction and other sections as appropriate. Other manuscripts (Opinions, Commentary, Book-reviews etc) may or may not have any sections.

Manuscripts may be submitted as attachment to e-mail as a single PDF or WORD file that contains all the necessary text, figures and tables. However, if the manuscript includes figures that must be viewed at high resolution, individual text and figure files may be submitted.

(b)     Abstract: This should be on a separate page and should include title (concise and brief reflecting the broad subject) of the manuscript, name/s and address/es of author/s and a brief summary of the contents in not more than 250 words.

(c)      Cover Page: Each manuscript must include a Cover page giving Title, Names, affiliations and e-mail addresses of all authors. Name, telephone number (landline and/or mobile), fax number (if available) and e-mail address of the Corresponding Author should be clearly identified. In addition, a short running title and 5-8 key words are also required. If ORCID id  (see below) of corresponding and other authors is/are available, the same may be also noted on the cover page.

(d)     Tables and Figures: These should be numbered consecutively in the order of their appearance in the text and should be provided on separate pages. Graphics software like Corel Draw, Harvard Graphics, Photoshop etc may be used for preparation of illustrations in jpg or tiff file format. Line drawings should be prepared with at least 600 dpi resolution, while photographs should be at least at 300 dpi resolution. All colour files should be submitted in RGB mode. All measurements must be expressed in SI Units. Multiple panels in a single figure should be numbered A, B, C etc (bold Arial font size 10). All other letterings on figures should be at in bold Arial font size 8). Legends to figures should be brief but should explain main features and all abbreviations. Illustrations should be prepared to fit in a single (75 mm) or two column (150 mm) width. A scale bar should be provided on illustrations requiring information about magnification. Tables should carry a brief title. Non-standard abbreviations, if used in table, should be defined at the bottom of the table.

(e)    Others:

All Latin terms (e.g., ‘in vivo’, genus and species names) should be italicized.

SI units only should be used.

Abbreviations should be defined the first time they are used in the text.

A space is to be inserted between a digit and its unit e.g. 1 mm (except 1%, °C). Use of kDa is acceptable for molecular mass.

Use s.e.m. (Standard Error of Mean) and s.d. (Standard Deviation) Use Ca2+, etc for ions.

Use superscript font to indicate isotope labelled molecules, e.g., 3H-labelled thymidine or 3H-thymidine.

(f)      Literature citations in the text are to be provided as follows: One author: (Jones, 1995) or (Jones, 1995; Smith, 1996).

Two authors: (Jones and Kane, 1994) or (Jones and Kane, 1994; Smith, 1996).

More than two authors: (Jones et al., 1995) or (Jones et al., 1995a; Jones et al., 1995b; Smith et al., 1994; Smith et al., 1995).

‘In press’ manuscripts should be listed in the References list as: (in press).

Citation of   unpublished data is discouraged. If this is essential, use the format: (X. Y. Z.., unpublished observations/data). Unpublished citation is not to be included in the References list.

Personal communications: When a person(s) who is not an author is the source of unpublished data, those data must be cited as a personal communication, using the format: (A. B. XYZ, personal communication). Personal communications should be substanti- ated by written permission from the source. Personal communications are not to be cited in the list of References.

(g)     References: Complete references, as per styles given below, should be provided on separate sheet/s at the end of the manuscript.

References should include names of all authors, year, full title, journal name, volume number and page numbers and should be arranged in alphabetical order of the last name of the first author.

Names of journals should be abbreviated according to the World List of Periodicals, Butterworths (London).

Manuscripts which are not in conformity with the format defined above would be returned to author/s for necessary changes before they are processed for peer-review.

2.   Submission of Manuscript

Manuscripts are to be submitted online at  https://www.editorialmanager.com/pins/default1.aspx. New authors need to register prior to online submission. If for some reasons, there is a difficulty in online submission, authors may write to swetha.rajakumar@springernature.com for resolving the issue. The covering letter accompanying the manuscript, besides providing a short note on the significance of the submitted manuscript, should include a certificate that the manuscript has neither been simultaneously submitted nor is under consideration elsewhere, that all the authors (if multiple) have read the manuscript and agree to its submission and, that the author/s agree/s to ethical policies followed by the journal.

Authors should identify the subject/discipline (1. Mathematical Sciences, 2. Physics, 3. Chemical Sciences, 4. Earth and Planetary Sciences, 5. Engineering and Technology, 6. Material Sciences & Engineering, 7. Plant Sciences, 8. Animal Sciences, 9. Microbiology & Immunology, 10. Cell & Biomolecular Sciences, 11. Health Sciences, 12. Agricultural Sciences) under which they would like the manuscript to be considered.

All manuscripts will be peer-reviewed.

Correspondence about any manuscript will be made only with the Corresponding author identified at the time of submission. It would be responsibility of the Corresponding author to keep other authors (if applicable) informed about the manuscript. The manuscript reference number must be quoted in all correspondence relating to the submitted manuscript.

It is mandatory to provide names with e-mail addresses of four to six possible reviewers of the manuscript while submitting the manuscript. It may, however, be noted that the Editorial Office is not obliged to consult the reviewers suggested by author/s.

3.  ORCID ID

The Proceedings of the Indian National Science Academy  encourages all authors to provide their ORCID ID no. in the manuscript. ORCID provides a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes one researcher from every other researcher and, through integration in key research workflows such as manuscript and grant submission, supports automated linkages between the researcher and his/her professional activities ensuring that the work is recognized (see https://orcid.org).

If you are already registered with ORCID, please provide your (and co-author's, if applicable) ORCID ID. On the other hand, if you are not, you may register at https://orcid.org/register and get your ORCID ID

4.  Proofs

Proofs for accepted manuscripts will be sent to the Corresponding author through e-mail. These must be returned to the Journal Office within 3 days through e-mail.

5.   Reprints

The corresponding author will be provided a pdf file of the paper after its publication in the Proceedings. No hard copy reprints are provided.
